Bra and underwear care

In order to take good care of your bra and underwear, we need to enlighten our readers here on wash and care labels.

The Circle - Laundry wash care label or symbol

The Circle symbol is a guide for the dry cleaner; it gives the type of fluid to be used.If it has a cross X through it, it means do not dry clean.
If there is a line drawn underneath the circle, it means a deep wash tub of liquid is advised to reduce mechanical action.

The Iron symbol or the temperature of the rotary iron

The Iron symbol gives you the temperature of the iron in use

1 dot * Low temperature delicates or silk
2 two dots ** medium temperature wool and coloued cottons,
3 three dots *** High Temperature for white cottons and linen
Cross X Do Not Iron. If there is a cross through the iron symbol this means do not iron this garment.
Always err on the low temperature side unless creases are stubborn. Better to iron garment slightly damp. Always use de-ionized or distilled water in your steam iron, otherwise hard water will damage the iron with lime scale build-up, which will block the steam jets with hard lime scale deposits. A steam Iron is designed to produce the steam and the heat together, so, if you leave out the water there could be damage to your garments.

Wash Bath Symbol or label for temperature & mechanical action or water depth.

The depth of the bath or dip level inside the wash drum, and the temperature of the wash is contained in the bath sign or a cross X which would mean do not wash in washing machine.

The Tumble dryer

The tumble dryer sign can be seen below in the typical wash care label. Always follow the directions on your tumble dryer for the amount of heat required. If it looks like a little drawing of a tumble dryer with a cross through it, this means do not tumble dry. This is for woollen and delicate fabrics such as viscose garments.
Never leave damp clothing in a tumble dryer without an anti-crease or safety program which turns the washing over every couple of minutes or so after the cycle has finished. Tumble dryers are subject to spontaneous combustion if hot damp clothing is left over night or for long periods with no movement.

The triangle or chloride bleach symbol normally with an X cross in it.

The bleach symbol or triangle lets you know whether it is safe to use a chloride bleach in the wash, this is normally introduced in the penultimate rinse, the one before the last and final rinse.Or when hand washing during a pre-soaking to remove disastrous stains or to disinfect foul laundry prior to washing in the normal way.
Great care should be taken when handling bleach, as it can cause very dangerous gases if spilled on to some soap powders, never mix chemicals unless qualified to do so.
